Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Launches Inaugural Cleaner Energy Schools Innovation Challenge
The Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources announces LCESIC 2026, opening Nigeria's first state-level clean energy innovation competition to secondary school students across Education Districts I, II, and III.
Lagos, Nigeria - The Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) has announced the inaugural Lagos Cleaner Energy Schools Innovation Challenge (LCESIC) 2026, a state-sponsored competition calling on senior secondary school students across Education Districts I, II, and III to design, prototype, and present original clean energy solutions for Lagos communities.
LCESIC invites teams of exactly five SS1 or SS2 students, each guided by a Teacher Mentor and supported by a District Coordinator, to compete across four technical tracks: Solar Energy and Photovoltaics; Energy Efficiency and Conservation; Biogas and Waste-to-Energy; and Wind and Hybrid Systems.
The challenge is open to public secondary schools listed under Lagos State Education Districts I, II, or III, the State's technical colleges, and private schools holding current MBSE (OEQA) accreditation in those same districts. SS3 students are not eligible to participate.
Registered teams will submit a concept brief and a prototype schematic for evaluation. Top-scoring proposals from each district will advance through district-level finals to a state championship. A multi-agency panel comprising ministry engineers, university faculty, and industry evaluators will score all submissions on a 100-point rubric covering innovation, scientific rigour, sustainability, and real-world impact.
Teams can register online at lcesic.ng through either the Public School Track or the Private School Track. All registered teams will receive the Innovator's Handbook, the Official Judging Scorecard, and the Innovation Toolkit upon confirmation of enrolment.
The Ministry will issue specific dates for registration, proposal submission, district finals, and the state championship in the coming weeks. Schools and prospective teams are encouraged to register early and follow official channels for updates.
